So some of you may have noticed a distinct absence on my part in the past few months, and for that I apologize. I’ve been quite busy with the three G’s: grad school, girlfriend…and…Grimlock action figures…yes.

Anyway, after watching the film I’m about to write about the other night, my good friend Greg strongly suggested I write something about it on here. I’ve been itching to write again in a non-academic setting, so I figured, “Fuck it. Write away, Lore.” And here we are…with me writing away…

I first heard of Apollo 18 a few months back when it’s theatrical release date was pushed back even further and people were rather upset about it. It was apparently something that had been long awaited by the online horror blogging community. Who knew. Watching the trailer, I have to admit I was a little stoked about it. The idea was cool enough; a horror/sci fi take on why, after several manned missions to the moon, we decided fuck it, no more going back there. But I was weary of it being a ‘found footage’ style film, which is in my opinion is the late 2000s version of that fast bullshit shaky effect that was pioneered and perfected in Jacob’s Ladder. Still, the idea was intriguing enough to keep the desire to see this film in the back of my mind. After receiving a Target gift card from my aunt for Christmas, I decided what better time than now to check this film out.

The plot is this (SPOILER ALERT): apparently after the “last” Apollo mission, (Apollo 17) NASA decides it’s a good idea to send up another mission (which is conveniently classified for DoD purposes, thus keeping all the historically minded viewers from saying, ‘’hey, that mission never happened!’) to set up an early defense warning system against the Russians. Because, you know, somehow a warning system ON THE MOON would warn us that the Russian were attacking us.

They discover that the Russians have already landed there, and are dead. Some creepy tracks show up, there’s some spooky noises, an American flag goes missing, blah blah blah. Turns out the reasons the Americans were sent up was to set up devices not to monitor the Russians but instead to monitor signs of aliens. Some more unfortunately predictable stuff happens, there’s yelling, talk of ‘them’, and then there’s an ending that I think is supposed to freak us out but again is just kind of predictable.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There were parts of this film that were genuinely eerie. The scene where alien tracks are found outside the lunar lander is really fucking creepy. The part at the end where one astronaut is fleeing a swarm of creepy weirdo aliens also made me uncomfortable in the best way. In fact, the entire idea of this film is unsettling. And the horrors of this movie aren’t merely of the fantastic and monstrous. Towards the end, we are treated to a glimpse of the cold and utilitarian nature of the scientific community when an astronaut is treated to hearing about the decision by the Secretary of Defense to fucking leave him on the moon to die and lie to his family by saying he blew up in space. That is some heartless shit. Unfortunately, a good horror film on paper does not a good horror film in reality make.

What Apollo 18 suffers from is a great concept executed in a piss poor manner. Like a lot of ‘found footage’ films, instead of appearing raw and uncut like such footage would actually appear, it just looks like a movie shot in a deliberately poor manner, but with just enough professional glitz and gleam to ruin the illusion of spontaneous footage that is discovered. In fact, there were times when I wondered to myself, ‘both characters are in frame…who is shooting from a handheld camera?’

In a similar vein, what was kind of the deal breaker of this film for me, there are scenes where one character is looking directly into the camera and starts doing the Jacob’s Ladder headshake. No joke. In a real time, non-hallucination setting, that happens in this movie. It’s like the filmmakers weren’t content with using the rough documentary style and had to dabble in bullshit that nearly ruined horror films a few years back. Likewise, there’s a scene where a character is taking pictures using a flash camera in a totally dark crater, showing flashes of the landscape before showing a mummified cosmonaut. Such a technique would be awesome in a regularly shot film. But in this style it just came off as too convenient and unrealistic.

What starts out as an interesting idea just dissolves into a confusing, boring, and lackluster film that is muddled, trite, and at almost an hour and a half way too long. By the forty five minute mark, I was checking Twitter, checking Facebook, kinda falling asleep. You get the idea. It’s like the filmmakers had maybe a half hour of great footage and tried to dilute it and stretch into an hour and half. What was a great idea becomes hackneyed and tedious, and instead of being scared consistently we are scared sometimes and bored for the most part. There were too many unanswered questions (what took down the American flag? Why was the Apollo lander shaking? What made the horrendously creepy tracks?), and honestly the reason we never went back was a bit of a let down. Basically, there are moon rocks that turn into space spiders and “infect” us and kill us and whatnot. Seriously. Fucking spiders in space. That make you crazy. Hey filmmakers, um, Chris Carter and the rest of the “X-Files” crew want the season 1 “Ice” back.

I wouldn’t recommend this movie. I mean, I didn’t even spend my own money on it and I’m sort of pissed I bought it. I won’t make the comparison to Paranormal Activity that I’ve heard, because aside from the attempt at being a found footage style film this has nothing to do with Paranormal Activity. It’s just a really boring, really unfocused, really poorly executed horror movie.

Frankenstein Unbound (1990)

October is here! Halloween is around the corner! And in an effort to make up for the slow stream of posts the last few months, we'll try to pick things up for October. Starting today with Frankenstein Unbound.

This Roger Corman outing came after a roughly 20 year hiatus, and has been his last since. And While there's a lot I wanted to love about this, and I won't say this often...but I just didn't get it! Not like I didn't understand what was happening, and I've watched plenty of turds with looser plots, but within those films for the most part, I understood why characters did what they did. Not so much here. Maybe this is one of those movies you have to like when you saw it at 10 to still like it as an adult. I really am torn, because this should be right up my alley. Time Travel? Check. Monsters? Check. Lasers? Super check.

The book Frankenstein is one of my all-time favorites, and if you haven't read it, please do. I'm sure it's nothing like you think it is if the 1931 Universal film is your only gauge. But anyways, Frankenstein Unbound, also loosely based on a novel on the same name, is in a way, doing what Pride and Prejudice and Zombies did a few years back. We meet Dr. Buchanan (John Hurt) a scientist in the future doing weapons research that causes time riff, warp hole stuff science, who inadvertently gets sent back in time with his Kitt-like super car to the 1800s. Here, and settling in quite nicely, he meets not only the real Dr. Frankenstein (Raul Julia) and his monster, but Mary Shelly (Bridget Fonda). This suggests that the events in her book are based on true events!

So again, anyways, back to what I was saying before, the characters here act super strangely, wherein a normal person from the 1800's mind might literally erupt and bleed out their eye sockets and other orifices at seeing Hurt's talking super car, Fonda as Shelly takes a nice Sunday drive and seems pretty comfortable with her brains where they are. And the end with the lasers and the clapper. It's weird I guess somehow these things just are as they are, no explanations.

It does take some good cues from the original Frankenstein novel though I haven't read Frankenstein Unbound. Like I said before, think PP&Z but with Frankenstein and I dunno, Time Cop? Not really, but you get the idea. It gets pretty wacky crazy at the end, and if you're looking for a different take on the Frankenstein story, I'd say give it a go. It's silly, it's kind of fun, and maybe there's nothing to "get" like I complained about earlier, but I can think of better time travel/monster/laser movies.

Alien 2: On Earth (1980)

Italian horror/sci-fi movie Alien 2:On Earth is supposed to be an unofficial sequel to the 1979 Ridley Scott Alien. While it doesn't really have any echoes of that movie other than having, you know, an alien in it, it is pretty creative init's own right. The beginning is kind of slow, following a group of spelunkers on their way do their thang. Once they get down in the ground, all hell breaks loose when they discover a organism down there that kind looks like rocks. I kinda dug this movie quite a bit, for what it is.

I get why they wanted to hop on the Alien-train and cash in, but really there's not a thing about this that reminds me of Alien. It's present day it seems, and the alien I guess is more of a shape shifter rather than a recognizable creature, but this has more to do with budget limitations I'm sure. It's almost like The Descent meets The Thing meets Zombi 2. If you dig Italian zombie movies I say definitely check this out, blu-ray if you can, and be patient during the opening act, and you'll see awesome things like this:

Written and directed by Alejandro Bruges, Juan of the Dead takes place 50 years after the Cuban Revolution, where the island is overrun by zombies the government swears were sent by the United States. Social commentary aside, it’s then up to one man to attempt to solve the problem. Part Shaun of the Dead (obviously) but with a grittier look more akin to something culty and cool like Six-String Samurai, you’ve gotta see this bad-ass trailer for Juan of the Dead.

So there are a lot of sought after and legendary pieces of media that aficionados discuss and speculate about, like the Beach Boy's Smile album or Jerry Lewis' The Day the Clown cried, some of which have eventually surfaced or been released, and for my money, destroy the mystique and never live up to the built-up hype. Chinese Democracy, anyone?

Anyways, to a lesser degree I guess you could call Grizzly 2 one of those, only for the reason that it featured early appearances by George Clooney, Laura Dern, John Rhys-Davies and Charlie Sheen. I had read recently that a copy of the work print surfaced and through some digging, researching and haggling, I got a copy of it and also now have GoldenCasino.com tattoos in my arm pits.

Being a work print, it's very unfinished, so it's hard to say what level of awesome it could have wound up being. In its current state...it's pretty ridiculous. Awful sound, not much grizzly or any effects for that mater and a terribly incomplete finale are what we get. And I've actually seen finished movies that resemble this completeness, so I assume this could have been an awesome crazy Jaws-like huge animal rampage story.

The premise is that there's a huge concert going down in the woods, and nearby hunters kill the huge cub of a huger mama bear who decides that killing all peoples is her only recourse. Almost like Orca or Jaws 3. That's it. With finale pretty much unfinished, how it ends is a little mysterious, but what we do know is that this gigantic bear ends up with a front row seat to the show, and by that I mean tangled up in a wall speakers flailing around. The huge crowd loves it! Here's a fan edited version of the finale to try and make sense of it:

But the best part is the music! The (temporary?) soundtrack consists of two Michael Jackson songs on repeat and the groups playing concert are hilarious italo-disco bands like Toto Coelo and other euro-dudes with short shorts. There's some pretty awesome rehearsal scenes for fans of camp, which we are.

THE BURNING QUESTION: Clooney, Sheen and Dern all die at the hand of the bear POV camera, and their total combined screen time is maybe 5 minutes max. So there.

The production was shut down for now unknown reasons, though speculation has run from dried up financing, to being ousted by the Hungarian government over paying for permits to special effects problems with the grizzly. Nick Maley who did effects on the movie has said that wasn't an issue though, but I dunno, the little that was produced look butt junky. Who knows. There are a few articles and interviews online that discuss the production, but now that it's semi-available, I can't imagine anyone caring. The mystique is gone! The film is unfinished! I can't say it's worth the effort or money or emotional/physical sacrifice to track this down.

Joey aka Making Contact (1985)

One christmas, my parents got me what they considered to be a pretty sweet gift for a kid, a Charlie McCarthy ventriloquist's dummy. And by all accounts it would have been awesome for a nerdy kid like myself, were it nor for the fact that I had recently seen Roland Emmerich's Making Contact. I can't recall the specifics from that first viewing, but I remember the experience clearly, and I remember thinking "Why are these people (my parents) letting me watch this?! It's horrifying! Why aren't they horrified?! Why don't they love me enough to make me turn it off?!"

Needless to say, the Charlie McCarthy dummy got more dust than use, much to my parent's confusion.

It took me 20+ years and a search on kindertrauma to rediscover this childhood horror. We open on the funeral of Joey's pops, and quickly jump into discovering that Joey's dad is now a ghost who calls him on a toy telephone and teaches him esp stuff like moving a glass of with his mind. And although all this hocus pocus is going on, Joey's toys seem to be independently alive, I don't get it.

Anyways, Joey then discovers a ventriloquist's dummy named Fletcher in a basement that shoots lightning form his eyeballs and growls a lot (that scared poop into my pants when I was a kid) who is also alive and reveals to Joey that the man on the phone is not his father, but am old timey ventriloquist! Or is he lying?!

I hate to say stuff like this in sci-fi-ish movies, but a ton of implausible stuff happens, mostly character stuff (so Joey's teacher sneaks into peoples homes and they don't care? In fact he stays for dinner?) The dummy goes on a rampage and traps some of Joey's schoolmates in the cellar where he was first found with all sorts of wack-a-doo magic happenings. It's up to Joey to go in and use his newly discovered telekinetic powers and shut that bitch down, america style.

The movie's pretty trim at 79 minutes, though the German version has about 20 minutes longer. I'm not sure what the differences are, so please don't ask. It's available on youtube though.

So many movies like this seem awesome when we're kids, but suck lion turds on rewatching. In this case, I think having seen it once and being horrified and seeing it again only now actually helped it. That and it's many references coupled with decent production values make it a cut above similar wannabes. The whole thing reeks of ET, Poltergeist, maybe some Goonies as well and even Star Wars references including ripped off R2D2-like robot that hangs out with Joey the whole movie.

We all know Emmerich went onto to bigger and bigger and BIGGER HUGER WORLD ENDING things. Every movie he makes apparently needs to out do each previous film. That man isn't content destroying the world twice for chrissakes. But here, being a super early work, his limitations in budget and effects help keep the story kind of grounded. I cant imagine if he were making this movie now how it might turn out. "Ok so instead of the dummy just terrorizing kids, I think it'd be more powerful if he runs for president and then tried to explode the world with aliens before he changes history!" "What?" "I know!" I cant guarantee you will like this not having been traumatized as a child though, because it certainly isn't great per se, but I found immensely more watchable than many of Emmerich's more recent disastersplotation films.

More than anything, this has me pumped to see Super 8. But you can buy Joey on DVD at amazon.com for now

Hudson Hawk (1991)

David Caruso, Sandra Bernhard, Zangief and Frank Stallone. The supporting cast of dreams. Yes, they're all here alongside Bruce Willis, Danny Aiello, Andie MacDowell and James Coburn in Hudson Hawk! This movie reeks of '90s absurdity with Willis getting back to comedy, but unfortunately, he's not always as funny as he thinks. This is based on Willis' one & only script, and it's fun enough, but it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense, even when allowing for absurdity to reign.

Willis plays Hawkins aka The Hudson Hawk, a cat burglar recently paroled who gets pulled into a crazy heist involving DaVinci and candy bars. His partner is Danny Aiello and together they time their heist by singing the same song at the same time while doing their tasks. Watches would be easier. And quieter. 'Cause they're singing this shit full blast in museum showrooms. Sayin'. The movie just gets nuttier and nuttier until it's full on lasers and DaVinci plans and glass shape thingies; I'm not sure what Willis was thinking. It's like part Indiana Jones, part Moonlighting, a dash of Caddyshack (not the funny parts) and maybe a sprinkle of food poisoning.

I'm a pretty big Willis fan, so I kind of enjoyed seeing this and maybe it only ought to stay for fans of Bruno. Hawk got terrible reviews on its release and it won for a sackful of Razzies in 1992. You could do way worse when it comes to screwball comedies though. And I think that's part of the marketing problem, which Wikipedia confirmed for me. You'd think they'red be more action based on the trailer, but it's more along the lines of Stallone's '90s screwball comedy Oscar or something, with action bits. David Caruso was pretty funny-though-bordering-on-annoying in his non-speaking role which ends with him painted up as a statue and then being crossbowed. And Andie MacDowell is cute as a button as always. But ultimately, if you just want to see Willis blow some stuff up, just watch Die Hard again. I assume all of you own it, and if not delete me from your memory banks, you're dead to me.

I think Willis and crew expected this to be a big hit though; there was a video game and the soundtrack features two duets from Willis and Aiello performing their heist tunes. There was a pretty heavy marketing campaign for it as well, and I'm sure if you've never seen the movie, you've at least heard of it. Well now you have. And you can hear the duets, including the whole soundtrack below. And if you're feeling especially saucy this weekend, you can grab the Gameboy rom also.

Zombie Lake (1981)

Riding high on the Italian zombie craze following the release of Dawn Of The Dead back in the late 70s/early 80s, Zombie Lake can easily be lumped in with all of the other imitators trying to cash in on Romero’s masterpiece. But while Zombie Lake doesn’t excel at it’s attempts at great filmmaking, it doesn’t stand entirely with all of the other run of the mill zombie flicks that came out at that time. It makes at least an attempt at creative filmmaking and story telling beyond gut munching and boobies. Which I’m both okay with, by the way. Once I got past the fact that people were swimming in a lake which had lily pads in it and a mud bottom (both gross me out…who knows what kind of aquatic predator is lurking in those lily pads or under the mud?) I found myself enjoying this movie. Sure, it had shortcomings. Quite a few, in fact. But what movie doesn’t? It was fun and cornily sincere, like a love letter written by a twelve year old, or those feverish promises of eternal love whispered while getting to third base. Enjoy the "Zombie Lake In A Minute" clip I added, by the way.

The plot is something like this: there’s this lake in rural France where young woman are turning up dead in/around and/or going missing in the area. The locals are of course staying quiet, until a newspaper reporter from The Big City (Paris, I’m guessing) finds out a grisly secret: a lake just outside of the village is said to be haunted by the ghosts of Nazis who were killed by the French Resistance and dumped there, and whenever they’re disturbed (usually by the frolicking of young nakey women) they of course brutally murder whoever disturbs them. A classic ghost story if do say. Nothing cutting edge, nothing greatly original, but fundamentally simple and elegant.

Points are given to Zombie Lake for at least attempting to be creative and somewhat different from typical zombie flicks of the time. Elements of Gothic horror crept in; for example, a one of the zombies had, in life shortly before being killed, fallen in love with a girl from the village and spent the night with her, and thus finds out after coming back from the dead he is a father. The shots of him being reunited with his daughter are unfortunately almost laughable in their absurdity, but credit must be given for at least deviating from the norm by adding such an element to the story. I also found the not quite a twist of the lake having been avoided for centuries due to pagan sacrifices around it to be entertaining; instead of just being Nazis coming back for revenge, which is kind of cool on it’s own, we are instead informed that it is a sort of Pet Semetary scenario in which the lake is already haunted and evil or whatever, and the Nazis coming back to life are merely the most recent continuation of that. The scene where the reporter asks a local tavern full of patrons about the lake was pregnant with possible clichés of the record skipping, and villagers suddenly becoming silent and stoic about their towns haunted past ala The Slaughtered Lamb scene in An American Werewolf In London, but instead gets sloppily hit on by some drunk dude. (Note: I am in no way badmouthing An American Werewolf…Hands down my second favorite movie of all time.) And the quasi shootout at the end when the villagers decide they’ve have enough of their beautiful women getting drowned by zombies and take a stand against undead horniness by engaging in a sort of OK Corral gun battle against the advancing horde of zombies is corny but effective.

The main attention getter of this film, however, was the cinematography. For something so low budget, the cinematographer made excellent use of the woods around the lake to capture a feeling of eerie claustrophobia, and while the point of view of the zombies stalking their victim shots have almost been beaten into the ground, here they were utilized brilliantly. The underwater shots, while obviously being shot in a tank and not actually in the lake, were thus lent a dark and brooding feel reminiscent of an Argento film. And the scene of the zombies shambling through the winding back alleys of the village was downright creepy. The use of rapid zooming to heighten suspense and emphasis a shocking moment worked flawlessly, a technique from that era of films that I absolutely love. The cameraman took his time following the characters, lingering upon things worthy of lingering on, and just made the film look beautiful. There were times when some of the editing was a bit amateurish, which I’ll get to, but largely the cinematography was amazing. The beginning of the film has a sequence of a young woman going for a swim who (shockingly) decides bathing in the nakey is a better idea and strips down and suns for a moment before taking a dip. There was something strangely pornographic about that scene, and not just because there was a naked woman. The lighting, the production value, the music, and the way the camera lingers over her boobs…I half expected a heavily mustachioed gentleman to stumble upon her and teach her to love again. Alas, no gentleman, mustached or otherwise, showed up, and instead we are treated to her being pulled underwater and drowned (maybe eaten?) by a zombie Nazi. As I said before the underwater scenes in this movie look absolutely amazing, almost dreamlike.

Now what DIDN’T I like about this movie? For one, it seemed a bit rushed. Some of the scenes were obviously sloppily cut, and the previously mentioned awesome cinematography would occasionally slip into a bit of bad cameramanship (?) that should’ve been caught in whatever passed for post-production. The scene where the Nazis invade France was confusing at best, as I wasn’t entirely clear as to what was going on. Why did the one soldier run over to stand in front of a wall and then simply fall down dead? For that matter, why did several soldiers simply fall out of a truck and lie there? I blame the director, and blame him hard. The scene where the one zombie finds his daughter was original, yes, but also really, really badly done. And the make up…wow. The greenish pancake makeup obviously stopped at the hairline and at times rubbed of on stuff the zombies were touching. I don’t expect much in the way of professionalism, but at times the effects were trying. The use of the same clip of zombies shambling down an alleyway five times in a row, interspaced with shots of villagers looking terrified, was criminally bad. And while yes, I do like naked girls frolicking in water and splashing each other, it seemed almost like a shot a nakey girl was used as a wipe scene. Oh well.

See this movie. I got it for ten bucks and it was totally worth. I was going to ask my girlfriend to watch it with me and decided it against it, which in retrospect was probably a good idea, so it’s not really a date movie but more a “it’s raining and I’ve got two hours to kill” type movie. Don’t really expect to be blown away, but allow yourself to have fun. In terms of Italian zombies movies, I’d say it was better than Hell Of The Living Dead but not quite City Of The Living Dead. So yeah. Zombie Lake. Enjoy.

Alien Dead (1980)

There are few times in life when I think, “Man, I could really go for a drink. Or six.” Watching this film was one of them. It was literally one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Sitting through this movie and not giving up on it was an act of Herculian effort, and I’m pretty sure I should be given a medal for making it all the way through. I couldn't find a real trailer for it, and I initially was going to just say the hell with it and not post any clips from it, but I couldn't not show the sheer awfulness of this movie, so I've included a few videos of select scenes from it just to back up what I'm saying.

I picked this up on a whim for ten bucks after having seen it at various video stores, figuring, “What’s the worst that can happen?” Simple: this movie. I grabbed the 25h anniversary edition, which is somewhat of a misnomer as this is the only time this movie has ever been released on DVD. The description on the back read about how this movie was eagerly awaited since debuting back in the ‘80s, and how lucky we are that a mint copy was found amongst a film collectors archives. I don’t feel lucky. At all. When I think of movies from the ‘80s that I’m glad were finally released on DVD, I think Monster Squad. That was a film I was ecstatic to hear of being released on DVD, not a sad attempt at a horror film by a director not fit to direct a high school play trying to cash in on the early ‘80s zombie craze. Goofy Italian movies about zombies (think Hell Of The Living Dead or Nightmare City) can at least be chalked up to the quirkiness of European directors, but this movie has no excuses.

The plot is something like this: a meteorite falls out of the sky and people start eating each other. That’s…pretty much it. There’s a sad attempt at ominous foreshadowing when local yokels heehaw about the local gator population dropping down for some reason in the swamp where the movie takes place. That reason, of course, being that zombies like eating alligators. But, where other ‘80s attempts at zombie-ish movies exceed, Alien Dead falls pathetically short. Think Night Of The Creeps but unwatchable. The acting is…abominable. Not that talent is a huge requirement in such films, but come on. This was downright awful. It’s like Fred Olen Ray just hired his friends to act in this movie and kept all of their first takes in the final cut. The production, despite promising a “Hollywood sheen” on the back description as part of it’s appeal, was reminiscent of the films from the 70s we used to watch in science class. And not in a good way. The sound was awful, the colors were washed out and faded even for a movie 25 plus years old, and the gore and make up was nigh laughable in its amateurness. Did I just make up a word to describe this? I did. Deal with it. One shot in particular where a character is about to be killed highlights this perfectly: his death occurs in a lake after he dives in to investigate a boat explosion, and we see, for at least three second before he dives in, the blood make up already on him. In another scene, in something like a sad attempt a Fulci-esque slow linger on gore, we are treated to a character who has just been goofily mauled by zombies as he lies on the ground, gone from the waist down. And you can see him breathing. Not once in a “did that just happen?” moment, but several times over the course of ten or so seconds. It’s insane. Insanely bad.

Now, you’re probably thinking I should see the charm in how bad this is, that I should embrace the schlock of Alien Dead and just relax. Here’s why I’m not doing that.

A) A. This wasn’t one of those it’s so bad it’s good movies. It was just bad. Poor plot, poor writing, poor production, poor everything. Just awful. Most shitty movies will have at least some redeeming value, be it creepy imagery, a good soundtrack, a touch of comedy, good cinematography...just something. Nothing of that here. The cinematography was uninspired, the soundtrack was something like the offspring of a Carpenter film and a Romero film but lacking the awesomeness of either one, and the only humor in the movie was a brand of “aw shucks gee wiz” good ol boy bullshit that I suspect was the filmmakers sad attempt at embracing the colloquialism of where the movie was supposed to take place. Florida, I think.

B) B. Most movies with small budgets, especially horror movies, can, in good hands, at least make something worthy of the budget. This movie definitely doesn’t. The back description claims it was made for 12,000, which grant it isn’t much at all, but you could’ve told me it was made by community college film students for half that and I’d have a hard time believing you. The indoor scenes, be they a bar, a boat, or a police station, all looked exactly the same and probably were shot in the exact soundstage/studio/whatever.

C) C. It lacks the excessive charm of ‘80s flicks. If you’re going to do a gory zombie movie, please, do an all out gory zombie movie. I’m not a huge fan of gore but I’m even less of a fan of half-assing things. There was precious little blood and guts in this movie, and I suspect that was the type of film they were going for. Same with pointless sex. I’m not really into movies that just appeal to peoples base natures with tits and violence, but at the same time if you’re making a movie that should have tits and violence then please give me shovelfuls of both. Alien Dead had some boobage, yes…but not enough. Not nearly enough. Not enough to really push it into that charming family of memorable campy films.

There you have it. A totally boring and uninspired movie, lacking even one thing that would make it salvageable. Unlike other splatterfests from that time period, say, Fulci’s ‘Gates Of Hell’ films, this movie was completely devoid of any artistic value. Sure, Fulci films are packed with excessively violent death scenes and the plots take a back seat to surreal horror, but Fulci was at least a skilled filmmaker who knew how to get his vision of what the movie was supposed to be about across to the viewer, even if the movie was supposed to just be about someone dying horribly. Watching a Fulci flick is sort of like watching a visual poem about something terrible happening over and over and over again. Watching Alien Dead was akin to watching ‘Two Girls One Cup” over and over and over again.

Don’t watch this movie. Don’t buy it, don’t even think about it. It was a completely irredeemable train wreck from start to finish and only made me sad that I’d wasted 72 minutes of my life. According to Wikipedia, the sole “star” of the movie, famed serial star Buster Crabbe, who was known for such roles as Buck Rogers and Tarzan, died shortly after completion of the movie by tripping over a garbage can and suffering a heart attack (on the day I was born, might I add). Maybe in Buster’s part of the country “tripping over a garbage can and suffering a heart attack” is code for “dying of embarrassment, regret, and shame”, because I can’t think of a worse possible movie to end a career on. I can sympathize, as I too felt all three of those emotions in spades after watching this movie. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go scrub my balls with steel wool and douse them in vinegar to bring my mood back to an acceptable level after seeing this movie.

This is a plot most people would think is PURE GENIUS!!!!1!!!! Let me be the last to tell you it is not. Although the scenes where Hugo throws dead lady flesh into the pit of cats is pretty funny.

Michael Jackson's Ghosts (1997)

Man I don't know where I was when this came out; hopefully getting laid. But I had never heard of this before now, and only discovered it by accident on Amazon. I think MJ was trying to recapture some of his "Thriller" glory as his popularity waned in the late '90s and he started to really embody the whole Wacko Jacko name. But he spared no expense here, the video is directed by effects master Stan Winston and based on a story by Stephen King, MJ and Stan Winston. Pretty wild bunch eh? This apparently screened in some places with King's Thinner movie that same year, and then was subsequently released on video.

And dig this description from IMDB, I was laughing pretty hard:

"The story tells of a small town that is very much bothered by a very strange and weird man living in a visually haunted house. One day the mayor decides to go with a couple of people from his town to the weird man who's living up the hill, and tell him to leave. When they reach the mayor starts convincing him to leave his town, but the people with the mayor started liking Michael Jackson, and he started singing to them and scaring the mayor. Until in the end the mayor gets too scared and runs away, and the people come to know that Michael isn't too bad after all."

The more interesting thing is that Mike also plays the mayor and the final video shows the process to have him done up like a cranky old white man. Wikipedia says this is considered by Guiness to be the world's longest music video, and I guess. I always thought 8 Mile was.

The Taking of Beverly Hills (1991)

Die Hard changed everything. EVERYTHING. Not only in the action film world, but in my brain as well. The series is one of my all-time favorites, but when the first one came out in 1988 and gave the world a vulnerable, human, fighting-for-what's-right hero that had little in common with the blow-em-up mega soldiers of years before. Unlike Arnold whose every bullet hit an enemy or something that can explode, John McClane had wits, little firepower and even less shoes. He made action relatable in a way few films could before it. So naturally, every studio wanted a guy in a tight scenario action movie: Under Siege, Speed, Passenger 57...The Taking of Beverly Hills.

I remember seeing this trailer as a kid on the pay-per-view trailers channel thinking it looked sooooooo bad ass. Boomer Hayes was THE MAN! Fast forward about twenty years to my actual viewing of the movie and my initial thought was...I'VE SEEN JOHN MCCLANE, JOHN MCCLANE WAS A FRIEND OF MINE, AND YOU SIR ARE NO JOHN MCCLANE! This movie is a complete stinker, shocking, I know. Examine my enhanced version of the imdb plot with your eyeballs below:

A chemical spill has caused the occupants of Beverly Hills to be forcibly evacuated. A retiring football player left behind in a hot tub after trying score some booty, finds that the toxic gas emulating from the spill is a bogus front for a heist set up by fired police officers out to plunder the city of all its valuables. He finds himself siding with a corrupt cop who was once apart of the plan until he discovered the city's mayor had just been blown away by one of the chief crooks in charge. Now both are on the run with no help in sight...both must do whatever they can to stop these murderous looters, including using tanks and homemade bombs and stuff.

Director Sidney J. Furie, the brains behind Superman IV and Ladybugs among others, leads a mostly sincere effort, but it really pales next to what it tries to be. I mean, this is a pure stinker, it's like Die Hard was put in a blender with the Pro Bowl, Bravo, and a bad sitcom. I think it might have even been written as a sequel to Die Hard, McClane now out in LA has to stop local terrorists from robbing the hell out of an entire town. I enjoyed it when they did that for Die Hard 3 after all. I you've ever read this site before, you must be thinking "what the hell, Marshall, you love everything that sucks, how can you be showing some sense of taste now by dismissing The Taking of Beverly Hills?" Well my little chickadees, to you I would say, back up out of face, homeboy! Admittedly, I did kind of enjoy this, but seriously, if I wanted to watch Die Hard, that's what I'd do. It's just so much better.

Funny enough though, I think everyone expected this to be a huge success; it starred Ken Wahl from the Wiseguy TV show, it was based on a recently successful formula and they even optioned a video game version. Yet it grossed just under a measly million buckaroos. The game looks worse than the movie, just look at this crap.

The Deadly Spawn (1983)

As you can see just one movie poster for this review wasn’t enough. If I could, I’d post EVERY movie poster I could find. Hell, maybe I did post every movie poster I could get my hands on. And why? Cause this movie is seriously awesome.

First I must say it's been on my “white whale” list for some time. I had it on my Amazon wishlist and would keep an eye out for it at flea markets before finally snagging a copy at Barnes & Noble, and I was not disappointed. I don’t know why exactly I had this movie on my list of things to get. Maybe it’s a weakness for monsters from space movies. Maybe it’s the vaguely Cronenbergian image of a human torso sort of growing out of whatever those things are. For some reason I think I may have seen this when I was really young, and maybe that’s why I wanted to own it the moment it popped up in my recommendations on Amazon. But it’s not really important why I wanted this movie. What is important is that it was there, and when I finally saw it, it was well worth it. Definitely made it into my top ten sci fi movies of all time, and for so many reasons.

The plot is simple and reliable: think such classics as The Blob, Night Of The Creeps, and Little Shop Of Horrors. Meteor lands in the woods, luckless camper goes to investigate, ends up first meal for something at first only revealed in silhouette, and it only goes uphill from there. The titular creatures go on a snacking spree, taking shelter in the basement of a house and eating everyone and –thing that comes within tentacles reach. In classic B-movie fashion, the burden of confronting and destroying the monster(s) falls on the shoulders of a young horror movie enthusiast who begins to suspect something terribly wrong is going on in the basement, and he enlists the help of some friends to stop the spawn before they reproduce and eat everything. Things go wrong, the monster stalks them throughout the house, and there is a final confrontation in which the beast is bested…or is it?

This movie is everything ‘80s horror should be and then some. It hits all the right spots for a good horror flick and suffers from none of the weaknesses and excesses that films from that era suffer from. There is no hot girl with her breasts all over the place for sex appeal. No pointless underage drinking. The Deadly Spawn doesn’t need that to be good. It confronts the viewer on fair ground and doesn’t use any dirty tricks such as the previously mentioned booze and breasts to get the job done. It harkens back to the golden age of B-movie monster flicks, a more innocent time for movies, but with a slightly serious undertone that transcends the hokey thrills of ‘50s movies and edges into something genuinely creepy. The idea of something coming from space and devouring people had even almost thirty years ago been beaten into the ground, and yet the imagery presented of some hungry and mindless thing dropping out of the sky and eating everything is utterly horrifying. The whole movie takes place largely within in a house, and this confined setting lends the film a suffocating and claustrophobic feel that is honestly frightening, something few films from this era can pull of without relying on a ton of gore. To be fair, The Deadly Spawn has it’s fair share of gore, but it’s not gore for the sake of gore; instead, it is only used because it is essentially to the story, and even then it is tasteful and within reason (well…as tasteful and within reason that such a film can be). It uses horrific imagery and creepy atmospherics to get the job done. The early basement scenes in particular are especially eerie, where a plumber is devoured in darkness by the creatures, and done so in a nearly nightmarish way. The use of shadow, whether done for budget purposes or deliberately for stylistic reasons is effective in creating a feeling of unease and uncertainty. Also worthy of mention is the scene where the monster bursts into the main characters bedrooms, an unnerving contrast from the dark and dimly lit basement where most of the scenes involving it had taken place in up until then. And, while we all know what the monster looks like seeing as it IS displayed prominently on the cover of the DVD and the movie posters (think Audrey II from the ‘80s version of Little Shop of Horrors and a tumor having a child) the first time you actually see it in the basement in the movie is rather striking. The monster effects are a bit goofy but still effective, cheesy but just convincing enough to be creepy. I wish they still made monster movies with effects like this, instead of hiring some goof on a computer to punch in the image in post-production. And as a vegan can I forget the amazing vegetarian lunch held by a group of old women that is interrupted by the creatures who end up being part of the lunch? Classic!!!

I can sum up this review in one simple phrase: buy this movie. Buy it now. It’s a ton of fun, and it packs a real punch in the creep department. It stand up there with movies like Killer Klowns From Outer Space and Night Of The Creeps when it comes to nostagliac sci fi/horror that is dripping with schlock but still has the power to be a really, really quality movie. This isn’t just another goofy ‘80s movie to watch with your friends and make fun of. It’s not so bad it’s good. It’s just good for what it is and nothing else. So please…do yourself a favor and check this out. You can thank me later. Anyway you want. Yes…even that way. Especially that way.

From a Whisper to a Scream aka The Offspring (1987)

"It'll take two men and a young gorilla to satisfy that!" Horror anthologies get it wrong so much of the time, it's real fun to see one get it right. And how come we don't get comedy anthologies? Or like, action anthologies? Would be sweet. Make it so.

So From a Whisper to a Scream kicks it off with a bit o' Vincent Price-ism to frame the stories of an evil-spirited town, Oldfield, Tennessee. The stories are pretty fun, and get more gory as they go. Spoilers within. Kick it Vince.

Sho' nuff.

The first story is a pretty weird/effed up story of Stanley, a murdering, sister sexing, mutant baby fathering dweeb. It's campy, but not in the ways junk like The Willies or Nightmares is; it's genuinely a sleazy junky story. I wish we had more of a finale, but I'll take a mutant baby when I can, no questions asked. This stars the funtimes man Clu Galager from Return of the Living Dead. He's pretty great as Stanley, I'd take a whole movie of that character.

Jesse Hardwicke (who will always be Bernie to me) is a good-for-nothin trailer park inhabitant who gets shot, and nursed back to health by an old-timer in the swamps. He reminds me of an eye bulger. While looking at an old scrap book, Jesse figures the old-timer to be immortal and demands to know the secret. It's a pretty solid story with mild gore, as compared to the previous story's pretty absent gore. It's actually a really good segment.

Next Mr. Price tells the story of carnival freaks under the rule of the voodoo Snake Woman. Specifically the Glass Eater and his forbidden love, Amarillus. It's not the best, kinda interesting though. I like the concept of the ending, but wish there was more with the other freaks overall. Like No Face man. "I'm a glass eater; I'm a freak!"

Lastly we get the goriest of the bunch, a Civil War, cannibalistic Children-of-the-Corn-ish yarn starring Cameron Mitchell. It's relatively tame in the gore department compared to other flicks, but within the context of this movie, it's more intense. This segment a pretty solid one as well, I found it kind of believable almost. Maybe more Lord of the Flies

For director Jeff Burr, this movie led to a bunch of middle of the road type of '80s/'90s horror junk sequels like Stepfather II, Leatherface (TCM 3), Pumpkinhead 2, Puppetmaster 4 & 5. Truthfully, I've never seen any of those (no joke) but I'd bet this is better. I know I don't seem too enthusiastic but I did enjoy this. It's better than getting a titty twister.

I don't know why it would be called The Offspring for it's theatrical release, since not all the stories really have to do with kids. It is a more '80s marketable title though, I'll give it that. Check it out.

As soon as I started this I knew I was going to be very angry with myself (which is why I'm drinking) or really happy with myself (which is ALSO why I'm drinking).

Turns out I am really happy with myself... and kind of drunk!

If you couldn't tell this is just a big low budget poop joke. Everything I could have ever wished for!

And guess what... It's actually kinda funny!

Yes, the plot is dumb. Yes, some of the acting is amateur-ish. Yes, it's a movie about poop... but there is something really fun about this. It's a total gross out flick with a ton of legitimately funny, well done dick/fart/poop humor. Reminds me a lot of a Troma flick.

Only gripe I have is how similar it is in plot to Jack Frost... you know... but... with POOP.

To sum it up... If you are on this site you probably like this sort of thing. It's pretty fun but ultimately poopy (see what I did there). I suggest you watch it... or don't... what do I look like your mother. Don't judge me... leave me alone.

Altitude (2010)

There’s the old adage “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, which means, I think, don’t be a superficial and judgmental asshole by judging someone or –thing on first appearances. In this case, I should have listened. DVD cover is meant to grab ones attention, to say, “Hey, consumer, over here!” and hopefully lure those dollars out of your wallet and into the pocket of whatever studio put the DVD out.

In the case of Altitude, I completely ignored that old saying, and gave into the initial stab of curiosity inspired by the cover. Say what you want regardless of the quality of the film, it is indeed a really neat piece of art. The ominous and stormy sky, the horrifying prospect of hanging out of an airplane miles up, the weird tentacles (or bug legs? Who knows?) coming from off panel…all served to instill in me a sense of Lovecraftian surrealism that I couldn’t help but give in to (the first thing I actually thought of was Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Horror Of The Heights”, a true shocker of a short story that I read as a kid and blows anything else horror-related involving airplanes out of the water). The description for the movie was something like “Five teenagers take a plane ride to a concert, something goes wrong, now more stuff is going wrong and they have to figure what’s going wrong before it’s too late and everything goes wrong.” Maybe I should have taken a cue from that and saved my money. But if I did that, you wouldn’t have this review to read now would you?

As the movie poster states: Lost in a storm. Trapped in a climb. Things are about to get worse. Broad, vague, and almost 80s action movie in the final line. It’s something like this: there’s this girl who flies planes, whose mother was a pilot and died under mysterious circumstances when she was a kid, and she and her boyfriend are getting ready to break up because they’re going off to college far from each other, except he’s not really into it, and then there’s another couple, the guy of that couple is of course a beer swilling jock archetype whose only really purpose in the movie is to heighten the tension in situations that really don’t need heightening( and also needlessly rip up the nerdy boyfriend’s sweet vintage comic). Oh, and there’s some other dude who I think is the cute pilots cousin. Why is he there? What’s he doing? It’s not important. So anyway, they’re flying the plane, to a concert, and suddenly it’s dark, and the instruments stop working, they’re running out of fuel, there’s some ominous noises outside, brief flashes of some cloud-shrouded monstrosity lurking in the storm, hostilities are focusing on the pilots boyfriend, tensions are running high and you get the point. Like I said, it was vaguely reminiscent of the Doyle story, with maybe a touch of Stephen King’s “The Langoliers”, but fell woefully short of the eerie and subtle fear that ran richly throughout both stories.

I really want to give this movie a solid review. I really, really do. But, truth be told, I was largely bored with this movie up until the last fifteen minutes or so. The characters aren’t very likeable, but the actors playing them seem to relish every line as if delivering them in hopes of getting an Oscar which made them laughably serious and only further serves to alienate the viewer. Most of the real shocking parts seemed terribly predictable, and most of the time I just wanted the scary parts to happen so the plot would move along and the movie would be over. But at times, the film seems poised on something great, and that’s the true tragedy here: in the hands of say, Stuart Gordon, or a similar master of inexplicable weirdness, this movie could have been really, really good. It seems like the script (or at least general idea) was written by someone with a love of classic weird horror (read: Lovecraft) and delivered into the clutches of some garbage modern horror movie mill that wrang any real goodness out of it and dumbed it down for easy consumption. Seriously. Everything about this movie seemed earnest and sincere, like they were really trying for something great and atypical of modern horror, but in the end I was frustrated and left wanting more because they made it entirely typical of modern horror. There were a few truly scary moments. For example, even though it was ludicrous as to why they ended up outside the plane, the concept of hanging outside of a plane while it’s flying is…kind of terrifying. And the brief glimpses of…whatever ever it is outside the plane, while being the victim of bad CG, are well done I think. The final shot of the monster, while lingering a bit too long and showing a bit too much, was, as I mentioned earlier, vaguely reminiscent of the Doyle story that scared me as a kid and genuinely eerie. The ending of the movie was so good it literally made me yell, “Dammit!” out of frustration and was enough to make me lament the rest of it. If the whole movie had the same quality as the ending, I’d’ve given this film a much better review. It came out of left field, it was creative and unexpected, it made sense, and in all honesty was more than a bit sad. But, overall, this movie just…didn’t do it. It was a horror movie. Horror movies are meant to instill a sense of fear. Aside from a few scary moments, that was missing. When I watch a horror movie, I want to be afraid of what’s going to happen next. The whole time, I want that. In John Carpenter’s The Thing, I’m afraid the whole movie, even when the characters are just hanging out and seemingly all is right with the world. In Altitude, it was like, “Oh crap! A monster! Ah jeez that doucher is talking again. Boooooring.” And then a few minutes later the cycle would repeat itself, and the flow of fearfulness would be interrupted and no one was happy.

So what should I say about this? How should I sum up “Altitude”? Well, it gets an “A” for effort, honestly, but other than that, I’d say a C-, if that. It’s worth watching, but don’t get your hopes up. In retrospect, I’ll remember this movie more for what it wasn’t than what it was, for what it could have been as opposed to what it actually turned out to be. I feel like Marlon Brando in On The Waterfront, but instead of speaking of myself I’m speaking of this movie. It could have been great. It could have been a contender. But instead, it’s probably going to be just another bum trailer at the beginning of equally bum movies, and just as quickly forgotten.

Here in Savannah, we have the distinct luxury of being home to the long-running Psychotronic Film Society of Savannah that screens rare/campy/foreign/crappy/amazing/cult films every week (sometimes a couple times a week). I'm going to try and start coinciding reviews with the screenings, but don't hold me to that. Seriously, don't be a dick.

Anyways, this week's gem is the Willard-esque romp Stanley, except replace Bruce Davison (or Crispin Glover) with Chris Robinson and replace a rat named Ben with a rattlesnake named Stanley. Also replace quality with poops. I think this film fits in nicely with the last review, Curse II (and former PFS screening as a matter of fact) since it has snakes. Also snakes are pretty sweet.

IMDB says this script was started and finished over the course of the weekend and the shoot itself was twenty days, and frankly I'm surprised either took that long. It doesn't play out that way on screen anyways. Oh wait, I forgot about lunch and bathroom breaks. So yeah, twenty days.

The story follows Vietnam vet Tim (a Seminole) that lives alone out in the Everglades with his pet snakes, his favorite of which being Stanley. Things start out simply enough with him just being a weirdo cat lady-like dude with snakes. But over the course of the movie, he starts to lose it when people beat up on his snakes and he learns the truth about how his dad died. Then he releases his inner slitherin and starts getting his snakes to kill people, kidnaps and rapes one of his victim's daughter (though she's ok with it at first), and then Stanley turns on him. At this point, I realized, Tim isn't crazy! Stanley DOES understand and think and make decisions, WTF! Before it just about a mentally unstable veteran man-handling his snake (tee hee). But now we see that he wasn't totally nuts. Before this it wasn't completely clear that Stanley was a rational snake, but only biting in self-defense like any aggravated rattlesnake might do. So yeah, Stanley starts biting the shit out of Tim when he realizes TIm's lost it. And then Tim gets all burned up in his cabin and the girl runs out and Stanley presumably as well.

So let me say, while I did like aspects of the film, like the weirdo placement of the music, the great Alex Rocco, and the whole oddball portrayal by Chris Robinson, the movie draaaaaaaaaggsss. I'm sure not everyone will agree with me, but seriously, it takes some time to get going and when it does, it goes no faster than a brisk early morning mall walk. And it was harder to watch the snake deaths than I thought. Dudes seriously pound on some snakes. Robinson slams 'em around at the end for real and one gets its head blown off by a shot gun. In the end though, the pros outweigh the cons and the film's moments, when it has them, are pretty great—Tim burying his snakes in tiny graves with tiny crosses, anyone?

Director William Grefe is probably recognizable to many of you guys from Mako: The Jaws of Death and Wild Rebels. According to IMDB, he still has the snakeskin vest Rocco wears in his opening scene. It did rule pretty hard. The dvd has a couple commentaries from Grefe and his screenwriter, Gary Crutcher, and the only reason I'd be interested in them is to hear what the hell they were thinking. And if anyone got bit during production. And why it took them a weekend + twenty days when the production values suggest it was no longer than a coke-binged weekend.

Now this idea I can get behind. Clark's hand gets bitten by a radioactive snake, and then his hand starts to turn into snake head and only Jaime Farr has the cure! My first thought, this poor dude can't catch a SpiderMan™ break and just become SnakeMan™, saving the world from evil scientists with his snake powers. But alas, as the title suggest, his bite is more curse than gift. Curse 2 (no relation to Curse 1) could be awesome, and I probably would've thought it was more awesome if the end wasn't so awesome! I'm watching, enojying, and then the whole end scene happens and all I can think is "YEAH THATS WHAT IM TALKIN BOUT SNAKES-GUTS_DID THAT GUYS EYEJUSTFALL OUTOH MAN IT DID SNAAAAKES" I promise I'm a sane man. So I offer you two options...1) Find this film on VHS somewhere, get some friends over and watch it. There are plenty of great scenes throughout, like the road full of snakes and radioactive-snake-dog. OR 2) You can skip and just watch the end scene which I have so generously put below for you, our dearest of readers. You'll also get a sample of the great synth score, sounds like it was right out of a Full Moon picture production. I'll catch you up if that is case: so now Clark's hand is cut off, and he escaped from the weird religious family and he's on his (ex?)girlfriend's car while the police and Jamie Farr are en route. This movie starts in typical B-movie fashion. Even my wife and friend commented on this. They generally don't like these types of films, so you know, take that with a grain of salt. Then oddly we all saw a turn. I knew how this movie was going to play out. Open Water on a ski lift. Which oddly enough... turned me off to seeing this film a year ago. Boy, was I wrong. This movie was awesome. Seriously!

I don't want to give away anything because its newer-ISH.

BUT... IT'S SERIOUSLY GOOD!

I also must add that watching this movie with my wife and her friend has added to the experience. Bunch of wusses.

Street Fighter: Where Are They Now - Zangief

One thing that struck about the JCVD Street Fighter film was how many of the game characters they tried to cram into the damn movie. Many got little to no actual screen presence, and at first glance, most were new faces to me (except for Kylie Minogue that lil Aussie cutie face! Tee hee!).

So I thought, "I wonder what they're doing now?" True story. So I looked some up.

Former body builderAndrew Bryniarski, better known to your faces as Zangief, is actually the most recent Leatherface believe it or not. His resume looks pretty good truthfully, Any Given Sunday, Firefly, Batman Returns, Cyborg 3, too many classics to list. His role was beefier than most in Street FIghter, but as with all the characters in it, pretty shallow. Ok that's it, I just wanted you to know what Zangief was up to:

Lock Up (1989)

It's overstatement to say that we love campy films at camp movie camp, that's for sure. And few actors can so capably make camp like Stallone, and while he's definitely had his share of critical successes, for me, it's everything else that shines.

This movie blows. But goddamn I had a great time watching Stallone mumble his way through prison. I imagine that Sly got ahold of Stephen king's Shawshank Redemption and thought to himself, "HUmmpaa Unnh Where da testosteronie, yo??" And so it came to pass. This movie is all Stallone loving how macho he is by exploding things or saving people from ridiculous situations like being trapped in a tunnel or being revived to stop Wesley Snipes, and that's the reason we all love him. If we didn't people wouldn't have been all chubbed up over The Expendables. I haven't seen that yet, don't spoil it for me. But seriously, pretty much all of his movies are him UHHHHHHHH I GOTTA DOOO IT EVEN DOH I GOT PRUBLEMS, EHHH OHH! I DIDDD IT!

So in case you don't know either films (Lock Up or Shank), in a tiny nutshell: good dude goes to prison where there is a terrible warden and guards who torture him. He makes friends and takes on the mentoring role for a young, misguided inmate who is then killed. And then prisoner good dude resolves to get out and get even. He does. The end. Yo.

Admittedly, this film isn't so fresh in my memory, as I had watched it with the intent to post waaaay back in September. So if you find my nutshell displeasing, then mosey your eyes over to Netflix and get some machismo.

And if you're the sort likes to listen to to macho movie scores, then here's Bill Conti's score for Lock Up, imagine that.

G-Fest 2010

As some of you know (aka probably none of you), I went to G-Fest this summer with my brother. What is G-Fest you are asking yourself? It's the nation's largest and most intense gathering for Godzilla fans (and all kaiju for that matter) that takes place over a three day weekend. My brother loves Godzilla and I love monster movies and ridiculous things in general. I've been pretty slow to post about the event and pictures, but I am doing so now, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the festivities. Well as much as you can, the pictures don't really do the event justice and are in no particular order. There were a ton of activities and sessions that we missed because neither of us had ever been to chicago, so we split the time between checking out the city and checking out G-Fest. There was a bunch of filming going on for G-Fest movie starring the official mascot, G-Fantis as well, that's what the little mini city was for. For me the highlights were the merch room and costume contest. I grabbed a bunch of great movies and some old '60s sci-fi model kit which had some weird star wars connection (one would think vis the cantina, but I'm not sure, there's Darth Vader, C3PO and R2D2 images on the side of this, but I can't read Japanese). The image below isn't mine, I should prob take a picture and update this later, but I have been so slow to get this up, I may as well get the rest up. Anyways, enjoy!

The whole experience was pretty ridiculous, and I would definitely go back. The fans alone are worth going to see, ha. I wish there had been Kaiju Big Battel event going on that weekend also, those are freaking amazing! Would have been great, oh well.

G-Fest is organized by the publishers of G-Fan, a magazine devoted entirely to Godzilal and kaiju culture. The magazine is pretty amazing, and if you're at all interested in Godzilla, I recommend subscribing.
